Septimus National Gallery trip

Published On: March 11th, 2024

On Monday 11th March, Septimus visited the National Gallery to explore paintings depicting myths and legends. They looked at three paintings in depth, investigating the narrative underpinning their composition. These were Penelope with the Suitors by Pintoricchio, Saint George and the Dragon by Tintoretto, and Bacchus and Ariadne by Titan respectively.

‘The gallery was impressive and larger than I expected. My personal favourite painting was one we saw at the end, called Virgin on the Rocks by Leonardo da Vinci. I liked the painting’s decorated frame and the way the people were posed, with Mary in the middle. Our guide Jo told us this painting is bigger than his most famous painting the Mona Lisa, which is in the Louvre in Paris.’ -Charlie, Septimus
